Why it’s Wise To Be Generous

A note: The following extract is not meant to be read in some ‘prosperity gospel’ – name-it-and claim-it-nonsense fashion as woes and trouble will come on all of us at different times and at different levels regardless of our holiness. In fact, one might argue that the closer to God you are, the more like Jesus you are, the more good you stand for and do in this world – the more resistance and persecution you will suffer from the world.

But the blessings we are talking about here are the deeper ones – not the flashy car or fancy house, but the generosity that may be bestowed on us by God and His people in times of desperation – when the Lord’s comfort (not always creature comforts are needed – He promises He will always be with us).

What we are talking about here is that it’s simply a fact of life – the law of God’s universe if you like, is that those that are generous with the little they have, will have favour with God and be dealt with some measure generosity back either directly from Him or by the agents of His servants or even angels and other unknown people.

Again not in a glib; what comes around goes around, ying-and-yang or new-age way (which to me is all about self and what I can get by doing x or y) – but in a real way, the way that displays God is still in the universe and His justice and providence still exists and is there for all that call on him, for spiritual or physical or emotional needs. It also goes without saying that regardless of what we might receive in return, we are commanded to give generously to all anyway – and when The Bible says; “especially to the brethren” – that indicated that we are to be generous with our non-believing friends too with prayer, support, money and most precious of all – we must learn to give the one thing we all hate giving in the natural – time! So with that in mind, now onto the passage.

From Ecclesiastes

“Give generously, for your gifts will return to you later. Divide your gifts among many, for in the days ahead you yourself may need much help.

When the clouds are heavy, the rains come down; when a tree falls, whether south or north, the die is cast, for there it lies. If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done. God’s ways are as mysterious as the pathway of the wind and as the manner in which a human spirit is infused into the little body of a baby while it is yet in its mother’s womb. Keep on sowing your seed, for you never know which will grow—perhaps it all will.”
