Why Catholic Clergy Are Celibate

In my study of the Catholic Church – probably the most interesting church in existence, I wanted to know the reason why Catholic clergy are required to be celibate – something that goes against common sense in my view. However I knew, that as with everything in the RRC – there would be good reason.

As it turns out (as far as I can tell) Pope Gregory deeply distrusted married clergy, who up to this point were mostly married, just as the Bible demands of clergy, for as I mentioned above what are in my view very obvious and sensible reasons – chiefly to make sure that as far as possible the clergy would avoid committing fornication and scandal, since sex would be freely available inside what was hopefully faithful Christian marriages.

The problem was, the Pope worried that married clergy might form dynasties and start to buy and harbour church land. Well this could not be, and the church had to have and retain centralised power from which to distribute the truth of the gospel as it saw it, and so from this point on – all clergy were to be celibate with the thinking that any priest that was willing to be so was more faithful to the church and the Pope. Of course as we all know, relationships still continued in various forms in secret and still do as we see in the news, but generally, babies and families would not come from these ‘faithful’ and generally celibate men.

But as ever – I will hold on to this explanation of why the Catholic clergy are required to remain celibate in the church lightly, until I have further confirmation and evidence that it is either true, only in part true or completely false, and would urge you as always to do your own research into this matter if it interests you.
