The Three Ways To Spread a Religion

There are dozens – hundreds – probably 1000’s of religions in the world all lifting up different ‘gods’ deities and even men. 2 of the 3 great monotheistic religions are expecting a political man messiah – not God’s spirit in a man’s body. So how is a religion spread – and surely if the three big ones are all adamant they are right – how can we possibly know or even claim that one might have more credibility over another? With so many similarities – we would need to see if there is something that REALLY differentiates them. One day this great difference occurred to me – as I’m sure it has hundreds of people in the few thousand years.

How are religions spread?

It dawned on me that there are only 3 basic ways to spread a religion. And I believe this may give us a clue – or the answer to which is likely the most true. The 3 ways to spread a religion are…

  • by force (no explanation here necessary).
  • by ticking people’s ears with things that are convenient (promises of nirvana – enlightenment – no just judgement by a fearful and angry god – the number here is endless).
  • by the irresistible truth (normally inconvenient to our human wants and desires – means service to others).

We all know which has been spread by force (I’m taking about an ideology at large – not the scrapes and scuffles or ungodly purges that occur along the way). So which is the truth? To my small and uneducated mind – knowing people and human nature as I do (chiefly myself) it’s very likely the be the one most inconvenient.

Forget Al Gore – Jesus was the really inconvenient truth

Many men will die for a lie – but no man dies for something he KNOWS is a lie. The disciples knew Jesus had died and were willing to die – if they were going to honest men – they simply had no choice but to give up their lives to the cause – not for any heavenly gain they were certain of – they considered that Jesus mission had failed – but then something BIG happened that changed their minds and they (all but 1) willingly (or more likely unwillingly) went to their deaths and the whole world changed.

Then wherever the book – the account of this historical event was read and understood by the common man, the society was changed. Bad men became better and evil men were held to account by people who now had their eyes opened and were freed from religious superstition and ignorance of the real laws of God. Throw away this gift, having gained the fruits of the bible thinking we no longer need it’s deep truths, guidance and the 10 commandments and we now see the result everywhere. Disorder and conflict even amongst ordinary people which can only lead to one thing – more draconian government and less freedom.

Take just 2 alone that are particularly relevant today in the twitter-sphere and around the globe between world leaders; thou shalt not bear false witness – and thou shalt not covet – these 2 alone if adhered to could change the world, but we see them ignored even by the church and the awful result in society – endless slander and endless wars. It’s time to bring them back into daily life as they used to be in homes, schools and law courts – because it used to be understood that apart from giving us freedom, these 10 simple laws were not there for us to be saved – but to be safe.
