Thought for The Day

Poverty is a Blessing (according to Luke)

How could poverty possibly be a blessing to anyone?! Jesus says; “blessed are the poor in spirit” but Luke says “blessed are the poor!” Why would this be a blessing? Simple. Jesus said it’s harder for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than a rich man to go to heaven – why? Because the deceitfulness of riches (riches make us feel independent of and not needy of God) make it very hard indeed for a man or woman to seek God before the comforts of the world – putting us in danger of our hearts becoming harder and harder rather than softer and softer to the point that we they are only good as stubble for burning.

But thankfully Jesus added to his point; that with man, salvation of the rich (not forgetting that 2% world’s population has most of it’s wealth making you and I likely very rich compared to most) is impossible but that anything is possible with God – in other words, even a rich man may be able to enter heaven if he submits his will and riches to God (he’ll have to leave his earthly riches behind) with God’s power!

The problem with earthly riches, is they act like a heavy weight placed around a man’s neck in a deep river that will drown him with pride and independence from God weather he likes it or not, and regardless of his ‘strength’ to resist it’s effects! “You cannot serve both God and mammon” The Bible says with many believing that ‘mammon’ here refers to money which if correct would make it a true statement.

The meek shall inherit the earth

I only want to bring these things to people’s attention and wether this means we as Christians should be rich or not (or even be concerned about) or give what we have to the poor, I will leave to your conscience since we are all at different levels of dependence on God and being rich in the site of most people on earth am not in any position to tell others what to do but only point people to what the Bible says. One thing for sure, is that the questions of exactly how we should follow Christ’s example, and what we should do with our wealth in all it’s forms are quite a sobering ones.
