How Do You Know if You are a Child of God or The Devil?

I was talking to a friend today who pointed out this verse to me as we were discussing what it really means to be a child of God or a child of the Devil. It’s a strong question and it makes me wince to think about it, as we all assume as Christians we are automatically children of God, and perhaps we are, but how does one really know?

Well as Christians, are we not supposed to find the answer in The Bible? Yes, and The Bible tells us in no uncertain terms who is and isn’t one of God’s children and why, and the answer it gives is unlike the answers I imagine most Christians would give if asked this question.

I think most would say (as I would have done); “I’ve been baptised” or “I accepted Christ into my life” or “I have said the sinners prayer” etc. But wait – what does the Bible actually say about who is a child of God and who is a child of the Devil? Ready for a shock?

1 John 3 (KJV)
10 In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother.

John 13 (KJV)
34 A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.

35 By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

The question is then; what does it mean to love your brother? Is it to offer to pray for them? Is it to wish them well? Is it to give them money? is it to lead them to Christ? Is it to invite them to church? I’ll take a look at the answer to this – again – straight from the Bible in my next post.
