Christians Do Not Need To Keep The 10 Commandments. Really?

I have heard this said so many times – because we all know clearly from the Bible that we are not saved by keeping them but saved by grace through faith. But that means we no longer need to keep them right? Wrong – so – so wrong.

The following Bible verse is indisputable proof – from a man that was right there – with the people that knew what Jesus would have said, and what Jesus meant meant when he briefly summarised the law in 2 commandments (as Apostle Paul tells us Jesus clearly did below) – making way for millions of Christians 2000 years later to use this as a loophole for not having to keep the commandments. From Romans 13 Paul tells us how to love one another (in red):

“Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law. For this (to love one another), Thou shalt not commit adultery, Thou shalt not kill, Thou shalt not steal, Thou shalt not bear false witness, Thou shalt not covet (Paul quotes several of the 10 commandments and continues); and if there be any other commandment (i.e the remaining 5 commandments he does not need to mention as it’s crystal clear which commandments he is referring to), it is briefly comprehended in this saying (by Jesus), namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.”

So Paul repeats himself to be crystal clear. He first says love is the fulfilling of the law – then he tells us this means keeping the law – then he repeats that to keep these laws is to love. One could not be clearer and these two – love and the law cannot be separated. Thank goodness there is grace and forgiveness if and when we break them – which of course everyone including myself does on a regular basis – even though in one sense when you look at the 10 commandments – they are really not that hard are they?

How hard is it not to steal, not to bear false witness, not to covet what does not belong to you, to honour your parents – not that hard! Yet despite Jesus’ yolk being light and easy we still all slip up. And he is there with open arms just so long as we remain facing him – in the vine and do not completely dry up from lack of his cleansing water (at which point we are only good for stubble for burning) – water which never ceases to flow from him to us as long as we remain in him no matter how blocked our spiritual veins and arteries become!

So again, the question is, how does one love? Paul tells us clearly above by quoting the 10 commandments. The problem is – that modern Christians think that loving one another is saying: “I love you” or “I’ll pray for you.” They don’t get it that Jesus summarised the 10 commandments as loving your neighbour! Not to steal – not to covet their wife, not to bear false witness, not to setup false idols (and thus not love God in whos image men are made) – doing these things are really how to love – not lip service. As we also know – faith without works (of love) is meaningless.

And let’s not forget who the Devil makes war on in Revelation – he’s not at all concerned about the ones that ‘love‘ each other with superficial words and thoughts and never miss a church service (though we shouldn’t miss them if possible as we are encourage to not forsake the assembling of ourselves for good reason – i.e receiving a weekly dose of inoculation of evil in a bad world and to build each other up) – no – the Devil is really mad at those that really know how to love – and demonstrate love for each other and their fellow men… those that “keep the commandments of God.” (Revelation 12:17)
